Yennayer Festival for the Berber New Year

This 12th edition of the Yennayer cultural festival is organised by the Numidya association. Every year, it offers a rich program including conferences, shows and guided tours.

Yennayer marks the first day of the Amazigh calendar, used since time immemorial by the ancient Berbers. It corresponds to the 14th day of January in the Gregorian calendar. For 12 years now, the Numidya association preserves and promotes each year Amazigh language and culture in all their aspects by organising in large festival in Oran to celebrate the new year.

For the duration of the event, many conferences will tackle the Amazigh history and heritage. The program consists of guided tours through the city, giant couscous, carnival, traditional fashion show, dance shows, poetry recitations and plays. Events take place in several spots, especially in Oran's Multimedia Library, the Abdelkader Alloula Theatre and the University of Oran.
