Under the Stairs: the artists' watering hole

In Old Town, this rustic-chic restaurant-bar is a hangout for intellectuals, artists, and students, who come for the relaxed atmosphere and the cheap and delicious cocktails and cuisine.

On the mezzanine floor of an old building hidden inside a maze of alleys, the place is well worth the effort it takes to find it. Home of the best cocktails in Edinburgh, the bar, with its plain stone walls and wood floors, is especially cosy around the fireplace. Everyone sits in chairs or mismatched sofas that are soft and comfortable. There is no better place to enjoy a Mary Stairs, the flagship cocktail of the house, a mixture of spirits and spices that whets the appetite. Choose a soup to start, followed by sautéed monkfish, roasted white cabbage and bearnaise sauce, or the fried chicken with leek sauce and oven-cooked tomatoes. It is hard to choose between the many local and seasonal offerings (which also encompasses the wine list, selected to support local wine producers), all reasonably priced.
