Do not expect to get into one of the 132 rooms of the official residence and office of the President of the United States, unless you have made the request several months in advance. But you can still admire the Georgian white building, built between 1792 and 1800.
You might be lucky enough to spot the Presidential helicopter, Marine One, landing on the lawn. Stroll through the neighbourhood, chock-a-block with elegant residences, government offices, major institutions, art galleries, and museums. The Corcoran Gallery of Art houses the superb collection of philanthropist William W. Corcoran. It includes, among others, paintings by Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, and even a 1939 Edward Hopper.
After your walk, head for a drink on the top floor of the W Hotel the view of the White House is superb.
