The Idiot, Russian cuisine in the style of Dostoevsky

Traditional Russian cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere that evokes the past. Let The Idiot seduce you…

Named after the book by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the famous Russian author who wrote The Idiot (1874) and lived in this neighbourhood, this restaurant has a quaint atmosphere, yet delicious food. A few minutes away from Nevsky Prospect, the building is pretty common and easy to miss.

Once inside, you'll find a row of vaulted rooms lined with books, photos, and paintings, while leather sofas invite to relax. Card games, backgammon, and chess boards are available, laid out on the tables. But it is for the food itself that regulars come to The Idiot: Russian blinis with salmon and cucumber or fish eggs and whipping cream, herring with marinated onions and potatoes, borsch, Stroganoff beef with mushrooms… as well as good vegetarian fare.

A small glass of vodka is offered to all comers, on the house. At the bar, try one of the famous cocktail specials, especially the well-named 'Crime and Punishment', one of the many specialities paying tribute to the creator of The Brothers Karamazov.
