Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

This memorial to the founding father of the Republic of China was built between 1921 and 1931 using the same architectural technique as all post-Revolution historic buildings in China.

Sun Yat-sen, considered ‘the father of modern China' was one of the actors of the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty, and the co-founder of the Kuomintang. He led several governments working ceaselessly for the unification of China.

After exile in Japan, he returned to China in 1927, and, in Guangzhou, was elected president of the republic. This is also where he created the Huangpu Military Academy, at the head of which he named Chiang Kai-shek. The memorial in Yuexiu Park is one of the grandest and most emblematic monuments in the city.

It contains an auditorium with 5,000 seats but few historical documents, just a few letters and photos. In China, the cult of personality never applied to Sun Yat-sen.
