When night falls on this particular day in late July, fireworks light up the sky over the historic district of Tokyo near the Sumida River. “Kagiya!” and “Tamaya!” exclamations reverberate with each new burst of light.
Dating back from the 18th century, the origins of these festive proceedings are still being discussed. They were interrupted at the beginning of the 20th century and were reintegrated in 1978, gradually up to their former glory. Indisputably, Sumidagawa Hanabi Taikai is one of the major events of the summer period. Find a spot in the Asakusa district and enjoy the show amongst a very vocal crowd.
