Horse riding at sunset
The seaside resort of Deauville, two and a half hours from Paris, will once again tick along to Hollywood time. From 31 August, the American Film Festival, organised in partnership with Air France, will see the biggest names in cinema descend on the quiet Normandy town. Between two film showings, you will no doubt be wanting to stretch your legs.
In that case, make your way to La Mangeoire, Deauville's equestrian centre, located within touching distance of the famous wooden promenade, known as Les Planches. Here you can do any number of horsey activities from pony rides to beach polo to vaulting for the more experienced… there is certainly something for everyone.
As evening falls, depending on the tide, jump on your horse and set off on a ride along the huge expanse of Deauville's golden beach. You will no doubt come across a procession of jockeys on their thoroughbreds who come down to the sea for its beneficial effects and to relax after training. When they have gone by, silence falls over the beach.

Anyone for golf in the Normandy countryside?
With a dozen golf courses dotted around the region, Normandy is the destination of choice for golfers. For a memorable golfing experience on the Côte Fleurie, head to Golf Barrière Deauville, a green oasis on the outskirts of the resort. Grab your best clubs and give it everything you have got on the huge 5,951-metre-long, 18-hole Tom Simpson course. Alternatively, opt for the 9-hole Henry Cotton course at 3,038 metres long, dotted with bunkers and roughs that make it all the more difficult. And if you are really lucky, you may run into actors George Clooney and Sean Connery who are regulars at the club.
If your swing still leaves a bit to be desired, then you can put in some practice in one of the many bays on the driving range. Or you may prefer to simply admire the superb views over the town and sea from the club house, sipping on a fresh lemonade.
