The West Loop Chicago Hotel Soho House opened recently in an old tannery. Clues to the industrial origins of this historic building are still evident, starting with the cistern that was originally on the roof.
Meticulously removed piece by piece, it now adorns a mural in the lobby. Its a stunning work of art, but the main reason for moving it was to make room for a 60-foot rooftop swimming pool with unobstructed views of the Chicago skyline. Less flashy but equally valuable in a city of especially cold winters, is the fully equipped spa and gym, with leather workout stations and Chesterfield sofas. The Music Room sets the correct tone, and the movie theatre, tucked away in a hidden room behind the library, is a cinephile's delight.
