Stylish hotels and rooms with a 60's vibe

After a three-hour journey from Seattle you arrive in Portland, the hipster capital of the United States. In the heart of Oregon, surrounded by rivers and mountains, the city attracts increasing numbers of Americans and travellers curious to sample its very special lifestyle. Hotels, boutiques, bars et restaurants have gone vintage, on the coat tails of the latest youthful American trends.

For an unusual arty experience, head for the Ace Hotel Portland. From the 1960s photo booth in the foyer to the old record players scattered around, this hotel offers incomparable style and character. There, every room is decorated by local artists: walls covered in huge stickers or black-and-white photos, claw foot bathtubs, bedside tables made from books or suitcases, and reclaimed furniture… An absolute must-see!

A stone's throw away, you might perhaps prefer the Kimpton Hotel Monaco, described as “the most beautiful hotel in the area” by the magazine Architecture Digest. This building, which dates back to 1912, is a little curiosity, in which Art deco and vintage are combined. Retro furniture, wallpaper and print curtains, geometric patterned carpets, curlicues everywhere, and a bold choice of colours…. Travellers will be amazed by this motley decor.

Finally, the Jupiter Hotel, in the trendy district of Burnside, offers prettily decorated rooms inspired by the “American way of life” of the 1960s, with its jaunty furniture and its portraits of Marilyn Monroe and John Lennon. The hotel also houses a contemporary art gallery where you can mingle with local artists.

Relax with an exceptional cup of coffee

Portland is also the city which pioneered the “third wave” of coffee. This movement, which aims to restore prestige to the professions of baristas and coffee roasters, originated there, at the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette rivers. Everywhere you can find unusual coffee houses, run by enthusiasts who are keen to let you experience the full intensity of their art.

Enjoy a unique experience at Töv. Comfortably settled on the roof terrace of a double-decker bus, you can enjoy an authentic and intensely flavoured Egyptian coffee spiced with cardamom. Foodies will also be tempted by the little Oriental pastries on the menu.

At Stumptown, you can inhale the citrus and jasmine scents emanating from your cup of Columbian coffee. Founded by barista-star Duane Sorenson, this establishment has become a temple for lovers of caffeinated flavours and fair trade. There, the movements of the experts are meticulous: each drink must become a real tasting experience. For your greater pleasure.

An unusual shopping trip

Vintage has made its mark on Oregon's largest city. At Yo! Store, the garments are a mixture of animal prints, leather and denim from the 1980s with handmade accessories from the new millennium such as baskets, cups and culinary accessories. You can also find a wide choice of trendy outfits there for grown-ups and for children, and even some designer objects such as bold ceramic vases.

Farther away, the world of kitsch has set up a shop at Vintage Pink. In this easily identifiable building, coloured candy pink with spots, you can go back in time and rifle through a large selection of garments, jewellery, decor, lighting and furniture from the second half of the 20th century.

Lovers of unique items will hurry along to the Nationale art gallery. Many local contemporary artists exhibit their paintings there, while the shop offers perfumes, hippie-style creations (necklaces, vases, etc.) and cult magazines such as Vice. An incredible artistic medley.

Immersion in the Portlandersculinary tradition

In this city with two million inhabitants, gastronomy is serious business. The locals particularly love eating in the street and, with more than 700 permanent food trucks, you are spoilt for choice. At Cartopia, a culinary meeting point for the local youth, you can enjoy delicious wood-fire grilled chicken at Chicken & Guns, seasoned with chimichurri – a chilli-based sauce – and garnished with crispy lemon potatoes and a salad of seasonal vegetables. A real treat!

Fusion cuisine is also a major feature of Portland and when cajun-Creole gastronomy from New Orleans meets the Vietnamese tradition at Tapalaya, the result is a real explosion of flavours in your mouth and a delight for your eyes. The grilled beef cheeks with its spicy pho soup will amaze you.

The vegan and vegetarian restaurants are a gastronomic treasure trove, in particular Farm Spirit, with its wide range of local organic dishes. There, the mushrooms are braised in Pinot Noir, accompanied by a peppery potato mash and garnished with delicious pumpkin seeds. Irresistible!

Where to go out in Portland?

In the evening, head for McMenamins Crystal Ballroom, a very fashionable hipster hangout, which houses a restaurant, an artisan brewery, a club and a concert hall. In this early 20th century former dance hall, you can sip – in moderation – a local beer in a jazzy atmosphere.

At Ex Novo Brewing, the first not-for-profit brewery in the world, you can enjoy unusual local brews such as “The most interesting lager in the world”, a Mexican beer with Vienna malts. More adventurous palates might even try the beer and vanilla milkshake.

Perhaps you prefer a sophisticated cocktail? At Teardrop Lounge, you can sample the exceptional Three-Part Harmony, a clever mix of green tea, Roussillon apricots and New Zealand Sauvignon blanc. An ideal way to spend a memorable evening a few hours away from Seattle in incredible Portland.
