Czech intellectuals have been gathering at Café Slavia, the most famous and exclusive café in the capital, since the end of the 19th century.

The windows of this unique space look out over the National Theatre, a symbol of the national renaissance, and over Prague Castle, a reminder of the city's glorious past. The Vltava river flows below. The café's functional style is heightened by French Art Deco wall treatments.
Claude Fernandez, in The Murder of Disillusion, described its atmosphere: “The woodwork, details, chairs, tables were tinted in colours… recalling browned pastries, milk, cream, chocolate, coffee, chicory. I loved this correspondence between the appearance of the place and its function.'
