North Coast 500, the mythical Scottish road

This really wild road leads up to the Orkney Islands. Discover a picture-postcard view of Scotland, which remained unchanged since time immemorial.

When leaving Edinburgh, you cross over Speyside before taking the North Coast 500 in Inverness. Be sure to fill up the car's tank before going, there is no gas station on the way! As it is only a two-lane road, you may also get stuck behind a carload of whisky or a herd of sheep. Take that as an opportunity to admire the endless landscape. In springtime, the horizon appears to be pink, while in autumn is changes from yellow to brown. You'll discover a wild countryside, gorgeous vistas, genuine Scottish castles and unspoiled beaches. You'll meet herds of sheep and cows but no human beings. Where do the Scottish go?
Further North, the light changes. Depending on the weather, you may discern offshore oil rigs from the coast, as well as the Orkney Islands. It is at Scapa Flow that the German fleet was sunk in 1919. Wreckage is still at sea. Baffling sensation!
