Facing Rio, in the ancient capital of the State of Rio de Janeiro, which you can access by boat, Niterói is a museum in uplifting architecture. Like a flying saucer, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer – with the help of structural engineer Bruno Contarini – is a white concrete dome 16 metres high and 50 metres in diameter, divided into two large exhibition areas. A futuristic structure opened in 1996, it houses collections of the most influential Brazilian artists, but also puts on performances and happenings by contemporary artists. Closed for renovation in 2015, the museum is expected to reopen in 2016 on the occasion of its 20th anniversary, with new facilities and programming. Don't miss the viewing gallery, from which the vistas of Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, and Sugarloaf Mountain are breathtaking.
