In the 8th district, in the south of Marseille, the MAC has, over the last 20 years, created a rich and varied collection of more than 800 contemporary works. The ever-changing exhibitions reflect much of the artistic production of the second half of the 20th century and the early 21st, starting with France's Nouveaux Réalistes movement of the 1960s. The ‘New Realists' worked with posters, objects of consumer society, and new materials like plastic and neon lights. Among its most important artists are Arman, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Spoerri. The works of Bouliès, Dezeuze, Viallat, Christo, Oppenheim, and Rauschenberg are also wonderfully staged.
This panorama of contemporary art is presented in various exhibition rooms and continues in the sculpture garden.
