La Halle gourmande, gastronomy on track

In the disused Gare du Sud train station, a metamorphosis has taken place: a trendy place is born, gathering about thirty food stalls that attracts all food lovers.

In Nice, the former Gare du Sud has risen from its ashes. Train traffic was discontinued in 1991 but food lovers have now taken over the gigantic building. Built for the 1899 Paris world fair, the huge metallic structure (18 metres high!) shelters food stalls. Thai and Indian food, burgers, sushi, pizzas, stuffed vegetables, coffee shop, fine dining… Various brands of both national and international statures rub shoulders with local restaurateurs, favouring regional products over a 2,500-sqm area. Once you choose a lucky winner, you only need to take a seat under one of the majestic trees taking centre stage amid this industrial setting. The mezzanine too makes best of that retro feel, offering shopping opportunities among a vintage decoration shop, thrift stores and local craftsmen. Keep an eye on the programming: on weekends, cultural events make the Halle Gourmande one of Nice's must-go-to.
