La Bodeguita del Medio: a sprightly septuagenarian

Mother of the mojito and Papa Hemingway's favourite watering hole, La Bodeguita is probably more visited than the great museums of Havana.

People make the pilgrimage to this bar for two reasons: because they're mojito fans and want to try one in the place it was invented back in the 1940s, or they're Hemingway junkies, and need to check out the scene in which the writer abused his liver during his Cuban sojourn.

Today, the author of The Old Man and the Sea would probably not set foot in this crowded cash cow, where the rum never stops flowing. But the place is too full of history to skip entirely, so come sip an over-priced mojito, or at least stick your head through the door. And then try one of 14 daiquiris on the menu of Hemingway's other haunt, El Floridita, just a few steps away at Obispo No. 557.
