La Baule: a wild, yet civilised coastline

Less than an hour from Nantes, the ocean and its famous bay of La Baule are a breath of sea air coupled with a gourmet adventure.

Nothing is easier from Nantes than reaching the chic seaside resort of La Baule.

On one of the most beautiful bays in Europe, it is a relaxing, salty paradise. For a walk, the best route is from the port of Pouliguen, having sampled a sweet “niniche” (handmade lollipop) at the Mignon confectioner's shop, down along Benoit Beach to the Hermitage, a perfect stop for a drink. A quick stroll along the Avenue General de Gaulle and its shops, with time to taste a “galette” from Barapom, and then it's the time to conquer the wild coast in the direction of Croisic. Here again there is a destination worth stopping for. Resting on the rocks, with stunning views of the Atlantic, the restaurant L'Océan is a discreet establishment in a remarkable spot, controlled with an iron hand by Mr Louis, where you can feast on fish and seafood.

The specialty, bar in a salt crust, is to die for.
