For ten years, contemporary art centres have been popping up everywhere in the city, thanks in part to rich industrialists and distinguished collectors who lend their works to foundations and subsidise art projects.
In 2005, the Istanbul Modern was created, financed by the Eczacibasi family. Superbly located on the docks in Karaköy in a former naval warehouse, the museum has over 8,000 square metres of clear, uncluttered exhibition space.
The permanent exhibition on the first floor is devoted to modern and contemporary Turkish artists. The ground floor has temporary installations and exhibitions by local and international artists. The photo and video art spaces are first-rate, as is the bookstore and the high-design café overlooking the river.
