Over more than three kilometres of fine sand, Ipanema Beach is even more famous than its neighbour Copacabana, thanks, of course, to its hit song, The Girl from Ipanema, and the fact that the cult of the body dominates there like nowhere else. This has always been true: the bronzed beauties of Rio's gilded youth, straight and gay, prefer this beach to all others. Favela kings hang out at Posto 8, surfers at Arpoador, and Ipanema gets crowded on weekends, with its volleyball and futevôlei (foot volleyball) matches. Best to get up early to enjoy the spectacle of the mountain view of Dois Irmãos—‘two brothers', because of its split peak. Later in the day, the spectacular sunsets are a knockout. Lounge chairs and parasols can be rented in the barraca of your choice, where you can order your água de coco, a caipirinha aperitif, mate, or globos—shrimp crisps that look (and taste) like polystyrene...
