Hollywood & Time: celebrity covers

Many actors have had their pictures on the cover of ‘Time'. The covers reflect a history of 20th-century America, which the National Portrait Gallery explores.

In 1978, Time magazine donated some 800 original photographic portraits dating back to the weekly's founding in 1923 to the National Portrait Gallery. Since then, the collection has continued to grow. There are nearly 2,000 images of numerous personalities from the political and artistic worlds. Among them, Hollywood stars such as Dustin Hoffman, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg, and Woody Allen have all appeared on the famous red-bordered cover. They have been assembled for an exhibition that celebrates the glamorous last century.
