Lyon was the capital of Gaul and it is on the ruins of the ancient city of Lugdunum the ancient name of Lyon that this museum was built. The architect, Bernard Zehrfuss, designed a reinforced concrete structure that blends in with the old stones and a scenography that goes back in time from prehistory to the 7th century AD.
Outside, the large Roman theatre and Odeon reflect the scope of the Gallo-Roman city. In summer the gardens are animated by the Fourviere Nights, with concerts and sound-and-light shows.
