The Lyonnais calls it the ‘praying column', or ‘the upside down elephant'. The Fourvière Basilica was built in the late 19th century on the site of Trajan's ancient Forum in a neo-Byzantine style.
Its architect, Pierre Bossan, wanted to express the greatness of faith. With its four towers and carved walls, the Basilica resembles a fortress and symbolizes the unwavering faith of the Virgin Mary.
Inside, the flashing golds and the play of light are fully vested in the Virgin, giving Lyon its status as Mary's city.
