Corte, the perched village of Corsica

Sitting on a rocky outcrop where it proudly overlooks Corsica's Regional Natural Park, the little village of Corte is worth the detour.

The historical and cultural capital of Corsica, Corte, 70 kilometres from Bastia, offers an exceptional view of the Restonica and Tavignano valleys from its perch. The best place to look out over the old city is from the top of the “eagle's nest” in this citadel built in the 15th century, now home to the regional Anthropology Museum.

After visiting the museum, which covers traditional Corsica, and the multiple upheavals that shaped the island, you can stroll among the cobbled streets of Corte, looking about its schist houses and climbing its rather steep staircases. A typical landscape is visible to you – behold the idyllic landscape with its lush flora. The village is the starting point of excursions to the Corsican Regional Natural Park: get ready for white water kayaking for the more athletic, or swimming and hiking for those who desire more tranquillity. There is something for everyone.
