Located in the heart of the old town, in the legendary district of La Ribeira, the 17-hectare Ciutadella Park is one of the largest and best-known parks in the city. It is also a favourite park for both residents and visitors.
This peaceful oasis is situated on the site of a large military citadel (hence its name), built in 1715 by Philip V. The land was subsequently sold by General Prim, on the condition that it be turned into a park. It has a huge lawn, a monumental Baroque fountain, a small lake with canoe rentals, the family-friendly Barcelona Zoo, the Catalan Parliament building, and three museums the Museum of Zoology, the Museum of Geology, and the Museum of Modern Art.
