The Humanist values of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, father of the modern Olympic Games, will be at the heart of the XXXI Olympiad, to be held in Rio de Janeiro, the temporary global capital of sport. Brazilian street dancers have been invited to perform at the opening and closing ceremonies, and soul music and R&B are also on the programme. The opening ceremony, which is expected to last more than 3 hours and 30 minutes, promises to be magical, with the immense talents of filmmakers Fernando Meirelles and Andrucha Waddington, scenographer Daniela Thomas, and artistic director and carnival specialist Rosa Magalhães as the programme's designers.
This is the first time a country in South America is organising and hosting the Olympic Games. Among the 28 sports, two disciplines are reappearing: golf and rugby sevens. Will the United States, winners of the last Olympics in 2012 with 46 gold medals, repeat their triumph?
The closing of the XXXI Olympiad will take place at the end of the last competition on Sunday, 21 August, starting at 6:00 p.m.
Air France is the Official Airline of the French Olympic Team. As such, it has organised an exceptional apparatus to safely transport French athletes to their destination and back.
