In the centre of downtown, this historic hotel overlooks Bree Street, where trendy bars and restaurants flourish. From here you can easily explore the centre on foot. The building dates to the 18th century, as does its grapevine, among the first planted in Cape Town, which today produces nearly 20 litres of wine each year. Located on the restored Heritage Square, the hotel is a living link to the shops of yesteryear that sold tobacco, bread, ropes and even firearms.
Within its walls, the sounds of the square, once full of pedestrians and shoppers, still echo. In the rooms, the wooden floors creak under foot, and the walls are covered with photos and works by contemporary artists. No room is the same.
The decoration also showcases local crafts from the townships. The hotel is very involved in the community, particularly through the Zip Zap Circus Association, which helps struggling children. You can attend the circus' shows by booking in advance.
