Designed by French architect Joseph Gire, who took inspiration from the palace hotels of the Côte d'Azur, this white neoclassical edifice on Atlântica Avenue and the beach of Copacabana, has been a Rio institution since 1923.
Guests have included some of the most influential people in the world, including royals, politicians, singers, and movie stars. This reputation is due to the excellent service and the luxury of its 96 suites and 138 rooms, which are divided between the main building and the wing, built in 1948. Most have sea views. The rooms renovated in 2012 are styled in a contemporary manner and come equipped with spacious bathrooms, enameled porcelain bathtubs, and marble-lined sinks. The lobby and pool are equally impressive, as are the three restaurants: the Pergula, for brunch, the Cipriani for Italian cuisine, and the most recent, Mee, whose Asian menu has been awarded a Michelin star.
The spa on two levels, tennis courts on the roof, beauty salon, and a host of other services add to the unforgettable character of the place.
