Antiga Confeitaria de Belém, an institution

Very close to the Jeronimos Monastery is the Antiga Confeitaria de Belém, ‘the' pastry shop of Lisbon.

Hundreds of pastelarias dot the streets of Lisbon, and locals stop in at all hours to sample the delicious pastries. However, it is here, at the Antiga Confeitaria, in the early 19th century, that monks first began to make their livelihood by selling small pastry flans (the famous pastéis de nata of Belém). The recipe, a jealously guarded secret, has been transmitted from master baker to master baker for generations. To eat properly, sprinkle your still-warm-from-the-oven flan with a little cinnamon and icing sugar. Tip: to avoid long queues, don't visit during peak hours (noon and 4 p.m.). And feel free to explore inside: just enter, sit at a table, and a waiter will take your order. Bom apetite!
