Ancient Greek Sandals, the feet of goddesses

Christina Martini and Nikolas Minglou have the world at their feet by reinventing the ‘Sparta'.

The 'Sparta' is a flat sandal that was worn by every ancient Greek (Egyptian Queen Nefertiti, too), and which has recently returned to fashion. According to the legend, the gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus all wore those shoes, made in Crete and holding magical powers. A shoe designer for Balenciaga and Vuitton, Christina Martini returned to live in Greece in 2011 and launched a natural-leather sandals line inspired by traditional models, with her partner Nikolas Minglou. It was a gamble, but it paid off.

They sell over 80,000 pairs in 500 outlets worldwide. Braided, laced, in tap, platform, on heels, even in PVC, each pair is made by local artisans using centuries-old mounting techniques. Sandals actually come with a small loop shaped like wings, a nod to Hermes, the messenger of the gods, and each model has a name suggestive of mythology.
