A journey through the mangroves of Le Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin

A journey through the mangroves of Le Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin

Listed as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, this bay, lined with mangroves, swamp forests, and beaches plays a key ecological role.

Leave Sainte-Rose by boat for a day trip to this 15,000-hectare marine ecosystem, protected by a large coral reef more than 25 kilometres long. This bay, with its many small islands, offers unique biodiversity in a fragile balance that guarantees the preservation of many animal and plant species.

Accompanied by a guide, you will discover the mangrove and its essential role, including being a 'surrogate mother'. It is a veritable nursery for wildlife, rich in sedentary and migratory sea birds as well as many species of fish, turtles, shellfish, crustaceans, and reptiles. Your boat will then sail to the îlet aux Oiseaux, a place protected from humans and planted with mangroves. Next you will head to îlet Caret for a picnic stop on this little piece of paradise, barely 250 metres long and 20 metres wide. The sensation of being on a desert island like Robinson Crusoe is more than just a feeling, as you are surrounded by an empty white sand beach, a few palm trees, and a Caribbean-blue lagoon filled with colourful fish.

And if you come back in a few years, you may be lucky enough to see some manatees, as their reintroduction is now under way.
