Visa and customs
Safety measures

Beginning September 8, 2010, a fee will be charged for ESTA authorization, which is required for travel to the United States.

Visas, passports, entry requirements… Read our travel trips to help you best prepare for your trip!

Prior to your departure, we recommend that you check the entry and travel requirements for your destination country/countries by contacting the proper embassies or consulates. You must have all required documents with you during travel:
  • Identity card
  • Passport
  • Visa, etc.
Please note that it is your responsibility to check the expiration dates of these documents and renew them if necessary (while allowing enough time to receive them).
If you do not have all required documents, you must pay any fees or fines charged to Air France by the authorities.

Minors with French nationality

  • Every French minor must have an identity document(*)(**): a passport or a national identity card, depending on the destination.
  • For international travel that does not require a passport*, authorization to leave French territory is required if the accompanying traveler is neither the child’s father, mother, nor legal guardian.
Please note: for flights to the United States, all minor passengers, without exception, must carry passports in their name.

Unaccompanied minors
Children under 18 years of age who are traveling alone outside of France* must present their national identity card, as well as a certificate of authorization to leave French territory, obtained from their local city hall (mairie). This authorization is not required if they are traveling with a passport issued in their name.

* Including flights to and from French overseas departments.
** Except children under age 15 who are registered on the passport of the accompanying traveler (issued before June 12, 2006).

Customs

Certain products cannot be brought into certain countries (food products and equipment, for example):
find out from the consulate or tourist office of the destination country which products it is illegal to transport.

Important:
The import and export of counterfeit goods is considered a customs misdemeanor.

The buyer:
- risks fines of up to 300,000€ and up to 3 years in prison for the mere possession of a counterfeit item,
- may compromise his/her health (counterfeit spirits, perfumes and cosmetics),
- undermines French industrial heritage and craftsmanship,
- finances criminal networks.

Breeze through passport control with PARAFES

You no longer have to wait in long lines before departure or upon arrival in the Schengen area. PARAFES, the automated fast-track crossing system at external Schengen borders, is a new, free service that will help you save time at passport control.
Once you have registered, all you need to do is present your passport at an automated kiosk and place your finger on the fingerprint reader in order to enter or leave the Schengen area.

This service is available for departures and arrivals in terminal 2E of Paris-Charles de Gaulle 2 airport and will gradually be extended to Paris-Charles de Gaulle 1 and Paris-Orly airports, then all across France.

Special formalities

Cuba

Regardless of their nationality, all tourists traveling to Cuba must obtain a tourist card from the Cuban consulate prior to departure. This document is mandatory and must be purchased.
Tourists must also be able to show proof of valid medical insurance. If they fail to do so, they must take out insurance upon arrival.

Saint Martin

New regulation: French citizens traveling to Saint Martin must have a valid passport.
National ID cards are no longer accepted.
