Zübeyir: the best kebabs in Istanbul


Close your eyes and follow your nose to one of the most sought after ‘ocakbasi (grill) restaurants in the city, source of fabulous kebabs and meze.

Close to Taksim Square, this ocakbasi is a must. Its large open grill under a copper hood in the middle of the restaurant is the main attraction.

The cook at the controls turns the skewers and regularly checks that the coals are hot. Regulars flock to the few seats around the grill, to be as close as possible to the show.

However, if the heat bothers you, grab a slightly more distant table. For starters, order meze with bread and olive oil. The aubergine purée cooked on a wood fire is sublime, as is the house salad topped with a sauce of pomegranate extract. For the main course, go for beef or lamb skewers, served with tomatoes, onions, and green pepper, and sweet chilli and parsley bread. And, of course, wash it all down with raki.
