Woodstock: Cape Town's Brooklyn

walking tour

This neighbourhood is a rising star and a gold mine for exhibits, shopping, and flea market finds.

Just a few years ago, few people ventured out to Woodstock, then considered far too dangerous. But everything began to change in 2006 when the Neighbourgoods Market started on Saturday mornings (9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) at The Old Biscuit Mill.

Since then, the stalls of this market have continued to multiply, and they now overflow, with upwards of 100 traders selling sun-drenched tomatoes, cheese with enticing aromas, organic bread, and craft beers. Once shoppers have filled their weekly shopping needs, they can check out the fashion and crafts on hand. Then Cape Town residents and travellers alike can nibble on some of the delicious, and often wholesome, goodies at a long wooden table shared in a friendly atmosphere.

Not surprisingly, all around The Old Biscuit Mill boutiques of young designers, art galleries, antique shops, and other outlets have flourished. Do not miss The Woodstock Exchange (nicknamed WEX) and The Woodstock Foundry, two other creative spots, right nearby.
