The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai: the art de vivre of Art Decor

boutique hotel

Enter this flagship hotel, the pride of Shanghai when it opened in 1934 and, for a long while, the third-largest hotel in Asia.

The beautiful white geometric facade of the Yangtze with its delightful small black balconies and rigorous foundation is just steps from People's Square, in the heart of Shanghai. Are you going up to your room? Maybe you'll want to stay awhile in the lobby.

Its burgundy carpet, tall burgundy or mauve armchairs, elegant friezes on the walls, gold-framed paintings, and piano next to the staircase all combine to create a warm atmosphere. Under the blue and green glass roof, an Art Deco gem, is the grand curved staircase. And the rooms are an extension of this warmth, combining red, ochre, and beige in a harmonious design that blends curves and straight lines.

The walls are decorated with black-and-white photos of the hotel before its renovation in 2009, when glass-walled bathrooms were incorporated into all the rooms. A very good idea.
