A hotel that calls its rooms ‘Copula' deserves attention. Especially since the Waterhouse opts for shabby-chic decor. It is housed in an old warehouse formerly occupied by the Japanese, whose concrete and steel facade has crumbled over time. The front desk seems a little crushed in the vast emptiness of what was once the local delivery hall.
The deteriorating walls, stabilised but exposed, affirm the aesthetic. But rest assured about the rooms! Rather than raze the existing structure—a very popular phenomenon in Shanghai—the architects preferred to build on its industrial heritage by putting in white and blonde wood walls, giving each room the feel of a Scandinavian loft. The all-white patio will also seduce you, as will an enormous terrace in a minimalist style, offering a beautiful view of the river, and beyond, to Pudong and the Oriental Pearl Tower. And be sure to have the Waterhouse breakfast, considered one of the most copious in the city.
