What would American museums be without patrons? Because of their generosity, rooms are filled with masterpieces. This is one of the largest private collections of contemporary art, open to the public since 1993, and compiled by Donald and Mera Rubell, a wealthy couple from New York.
What do they like? The works of artists from the 1960s up to today: Jeff Koons, Keith Haring, Paul McCarthy, Jean-Michel Basquiat. The first work they bought was a 1964 Robert Motherwell. Their choices are often daring, which may not appeal to all visitors.
All these works are exhibited over several storeys in a huge industrial space in the Wynwood Art District. The collection continues to evolve, as Rubell continues to buy, especially the works of young artists. Some of the exhibitions here are then presented in other museums. The openings are popular with Miami's beautiful people.
