The Phillips Collection: a dazzling collection of Impressionist art

art & culture

At the heart of the Dupont Circle neighbourhood, the superb Phillips Collection is a big draw.

This small museum has a wonderful collection of almost 3,000 works. The Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Cubist paintings were collected in the 1920s by Duncan Phillips, a steelworks heir with a passion for art, who opened his home to a select public in order to show off his acquisitions.

Gradually, he expanded the collection and enlarged his house. Today, visitors flock to see the stunning works by Renoir, Cezanne, Monet, Gauguin, Picasso, and, Phillips' favourite, Bonnard.

One room is exclusively reserved for four abstract paintings by Mark Rothko, one on each wall.
