The Michelberger Hotel

trendy

An artistic and wacky place, not to be missed.

Conceived by designer Werner Aisslinger, the Michelberger is a very cool-looking converted factory in Berlin's lively Friedrichshain district. The lobby has giant sofas, the café has live music jams every night, with free access to musical instruments, and the Whisky Room is filled with antique furniture from the Mauerpark flea market.

The 119 rooms for two, three, or eight people are different but all very bright, with high ceilings. The restaurant has mismatched chairs and tiles and serves gargantuan breakfasts prepared with fresh, local ingredients, served on kitchen tables. The bar is open all day and the house cocktails are sublime.

In summer, patrons come to sunbathe on deckchairs, hang out in the Biergarten, and dine around the large barbecue. The East Side Gallery is a five-minute walk and the Kreuzberg district a mere ten.
