The Metropolitan Museum of Art: the unsurpassable ‘Met'

museum

The Met is a legend: open to the public since 20 February 1872, it is among the greatest art museums in the world.

Located in the centre of Manhattan on Fifth Avenue, close to Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art receives about 5 million visitors annually.

The building itself is a masterpiece. Once past the columns in the front, the huge lobby opens onto a monumental central staircase that leads to the various rooms and departments. The museum has a collection of 2 million objects and works (of which 1 million are visible to the public), which cover a period of more than 5,000 years, from all continents and all cultures.

You will come across Greek and Egyptian wonders, ancient Roman works, treasures from both medieval and modern times, and a magnificent panorama of Native American tribal art, as well as works from Asian and Islamic civilizations. The Met is also a temple for the works of European masters from the 15th to the 20th centuries.
