The Mercado de San Telmo, a colourful and vibrant market

In the centre of the historic district of Buenos Aires, the Mercado de San Telmo is a picturesque landmark.

In the heart of San Telmo, the market of the same name, with its steel beams running under the ceiling, resembles a construction one might ascribe to Eiffel. Under its beautiful stained glass and wrought iron arches, local and passing travellers stroll among the bustling shops. This market style, with its Italianate façades, is typical of Latin American countries.

Head to the central area where cheese and other fresh food purveyors are concentrated, or walk around its extremities to visit the antique and craft shops. If hungry, eat a meat empanada just out of the oven. On Sundays the whole neighbourhood turns into a flea market. You will also find many colourful merchants and antique stands as well as Porteños playing the guitar in front of bars.
