The Institute of Contemporary Art: Boston's cultural cutting-edge

Opened in 2006, the ICA provides a backdrop to local talent and positions Boston as a major player on the contemporary art scene.

The Institute of Contemporary Art on Fan Pier has given new life to Boston. Its spectacular glass architecture, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, seems to disappear into the water. Inside, the vast spaces bathed in natural light showcase avant-garde works by Thomas Hirschhorn, Cindy Sherman, Louise Bourgeois, Rineke Dijkstra, Marlene Dumas, Nan Goldin, and Mona Hatoum, among many others. The presence of so many female artists is explained by a donation: The Barbara Lee Collection of Art by Women. The ICA's temporary exhibitions—solo artists or thematic shows—are of exceptionally high quality. And the views of Boston Harbor from the top floor are equally stunning.
