The George: a hotel with a posh British accent

fashion

A member of the Design Hotels network, this property moored near the Alster in 2008.

In 2008, a little corner of England landed in the vibrantly multicultural, trendy, and gay friendly St Georg district. At The George, three famous designers (Terence Conran, Kit Kemp, and Paul Smith) interact in unexpected ways through some interesting decorative touches. Chesterfield armchairs and Union Jack cushions evoke the atmosphere of an English private club at teatime.

But these traditional touches are jostled by the beautiful collection of contemporary photographs on the walls, including in one of the two libraries. The 125 rooms and suites (five categories) are decidedly elegant, yet with a twist thanks to the Eames rocking chairs and colourful wallpaper. The bar is famous for its varieties of gin and whiskey, and the DaCaio restaurant is popular with tourists and all of Hamburg, in fact. In summer, the surprise is at the top of the stairs to the roof. The rooftop bar has a stunning view of the lake and its sailboats.
