Located 2,190 metres above sea level in the heart of the National Park of Réunion, the Piton Maïdo is one of the island's most spectacular spots. It affords a panoramic view over Mafate and the west coast of the island with its golden sand beaches. Starting from St. Paul, it is a beautiful hike for all levels. Many islets that can be seen from here are inhabited, consisting of hamlets and isolated villages, where some people still live independently, almost off the grid, with supplies occasionally brought in by helicopters. Note that Piton Maïdo is accessible by car. This offers an opportunity to admire the Gros Morne, the Grand Bénare, (third highest peak of the island at 2,898 metres), the Col du Taïbit and the majestic Piton des Neiges. For mountain bike lovers, it is also possible to bike to the seaside resort of Saint-Gilles. The ‘Mégavalanche de la Réunion', a famous mountain bike race is organised here each year.
