Inaugurated in 1912, the Astoria, overlooking St. Isaacs Cathedral, has a long history. Some of it was tragic: for example, when it was converted into a hospital for artists and writers during the Leningrad siege. Some of it, more amusing: when, for example, James Bond stayed here in the 1995 film Golden Eye.
Today, it is in the heart of the historic district, a modern and very comfortable hotel with 83 tastefully furnished rooms and 86 suites. The decorator Olga Polizzi, the owners sister, used colourful bedspreads and carpets to pump up the glamor. The bathrooms are in white marble. Breakfast is served in the winter garden, the same place where Hitler was planning to organise a banquet to celebrate his victory over the city.
Obviously, it never happened. Enjoy the buffet, prepared by a French chef, who also remains in charge for dinner.
