Taberna da Rua das Flores: Essential

hot tip

Nestled in an old grocery store in Chiado, the Taberna serves forgotten Portuguese cuisine. A canteen not to be missed.

Nothing ostentatious in this small neighbourhood restaurant. The only possible drawback is the small crowd of Lisboans waiting for their tables outside, a glass in hand. For the Taberna does not take reservations. And for good reason. This popular restaurant has a dozen small tables along a corridor with minimalist décor where only the original tiles provide a touch of colour. There are no frills because absolutely everything here happens on the plate. From classic lunch dishes to plates to share in the evening, the slate is renewed twice daily depending on the market and especially what fresh fish is available. Raw, marinated, half-baked, fried, and grilled, fish is, of course, the centrepiece. Traditional Portuguese recipes are enlivened by a very assured modernity. The same approach is taken with game and white meat served with herbs and a perfect use of spices.
