Swimming with the sharks, paddling with the dolphins

wellness & sport

Guaranteed adrenaline with a cage dropped into the sea, a dive into Two Oceans Aquarium, or a joy ride aboard a kayak.

If Steven Spielberg's Jaws made you smile, you may be ready to swim with the sharks! You can opt to do a shark dive (safely ensconced in a steel cage) in several areas, including Shark Alley near Dyer Island, two hours south of Cape Town, or Mossel Bay, a four-hour drive to the west.

You can also dive at the Two Oceans Aquarium at Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town, an option that will let you show off in front of the family. The dives are in the Predator Exhibit, where there are many fish friends with large teeth. A scuba license is required.

Other less dramatic confrontations with nature can be made on a kayak. You can see humpback whales (between July and December), seals, penguins, and even dolphins. You may go home with some close-ups of these happy mammals of the sea that always seem to be smiling.
