Stroll from gallery to gallery at Al Quoz

art & culture

This industrial area has been transformed into a trendy artistic neighbourhood.

Many contemporary art galleries have taken up residence in the Al Quoz industrial district, in the western part of Dubai. As in New York, Berlin, and Chicago before it, in Dubai the most hip galleries, concept stores, and cafés have settled into dormant industrial spaces, attracted by the low prices of these abandoned warehouses.

Courtyard was the first to settle here in 2000, and showed such greats as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Salvador Dali. For fans of comics, The Cartoon Art Gallery, right next door, exhibits the works of cartoonists and illustrators, and organises video screenings of animated films.

Feel free to take a break in a café before moving onwards to Alserkal Avenue, a former marble factory that has hosted more than 30 galleries, studios, and theatres since 2007. Also check out the 1×1 Art Gallery, specialists in artists from India, which has relocated to Alserkal.
