Sakhumzi awaits you on the famous Vilakazi Street, the heart of the historical and cultural centre of Soweto and the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize winners used to live: Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela. A former shebeen, an illegal bar during apartheid, it is now a traditional restaurant that is very appreciated by the population of the district.
On the menu, some Zulu or Xhosa dishes such as mielie pap (mashed maize), xushu (beans and maize kernels) served with a mutton stew, morogo (wild spinach), dombolo (a steam-baked bread), and umngqusho (maize served with beans), one of Nelson Mandela's favourite dishes. You can also opt for a stew, a curry, grilled meats, snacks, or salads. Lunch at the picnic tables on a shaded terrace outside, and take in the ambience of this famous district.
