Picasso: A Genius Without a Pedestal

Published on 02-28-2016 Agenda

MuCEM presents a major retrospective that explores Picasso's connection to his era and his roots, and how he was influenced by popular arts and traditions.

The Museum of Civilization in Europe and the Mediterranean (MuCEM) takes a surprising and engaging look at the influences of the Spanish master. Though a pioneering artist, Pablo Picasso never denied a strong attachment to his roots. The recurring motifs of his work (circus, bullfighting, music, etc.) and his craft skills (ceramic, metal, and wood) show how popular arts and traditions continually fed his inspiration. The exhibition juxtaposes works by the artist and key objects in the museum collection. Many of the artist's masterpieces in the show have never been seen by the public.
