Throughout the city you'll find a mixture of traditional colourful houses, small white churches, and modern luxury hotels. The city is especially worth a visit for its duty-free shops.

In between shopping expeditions, however, you can visit the Sint Maarten Museum. Its collections reflect the culture of the island, and the ruins of Fort Amsterdam, in the southeast, which offers a nice view of the bay.

The zoo and botanical garden, which contain more than 35 animal species, are also worth a visit. A tip: do not leave without a bottle of Guavaberry, produced from the Caribbean fruit of the same name mixed with aged rum and cane sugar. The traditional liqueur of Saint Martin, it is absolutely delicious.
