Panjiayuan Market: a flea market on a Chinese scale

shopping

Because bargain hunting in China is a national sport, you will unearth treasures in this market, which sells local crafts.

Penjiayuan, commonly called the ‘thieves' market', is full of stalls and swarms of onlookers, as well as second-hand dealers.

Here you will find remnants of the Maoist era, more souvenirs now than objects of veneration. This is also an opportunity to discover local crafts, including paper cutting, an ancient Chinese art that still adorns the windows of houses in the New Year to ward off evil spirits…

In the joyful chaos in the aisles, you can find a plethora of traditional items: hat boxes with pieces of porcelain, calligraphy brushes with little trinkets. Here, as elsewhere, everyone bargains. If you don't play the game, it will only frustrate the seller and the buyer! But don't delude yourself: real Chinese antiques are found more frequently at Sotheby's!
